Direct access to your storage is part of every paid plan. Your photos are ordinary files in ordinary folders, and there are three standard ways to reach them - no app required.

SFTP - spoken by hundreds of apps: Cyberduck, FileZilla, Termius, your favorite file manager. The app shows your host, user and password.
WebDAV - mount the backup as a network drive over HTTPS. Windows, macOS Finder and most Android file managers handle it out of the box.
Samba / SMB - a network drive on the classic Windows protocol. It needs port 445, which mobile networks and many home providers block, so it works best from a machine on a fixed line.
Upload anything else too - documents, archives, whatever you like. It simply counts toward your storage plan.
No lock-in: your data is yours to take, anytime - and the app erases it from the server whenever you want, on any plan.

WebDAV and Samba start switched off - turn either on in the app when you need it, and give the server a few seconds to apply it. On the free plan the app itself does the browsing and restoring for you.

Frequently asked questions

Are my photos safe?

Yes. Files are transferred over encrypted SFTP (SSH) and stored in European data centers. "Free up space" removes a file from your phone only after the app has compared SHA-256 checksums and proved the copy on the server is byte-for-byte identical; whatever does not match is left alone and sent again. You can delete permanently, which frees the space immediately, or move to the system trash, which gives you ~30 days to change your mind - there the space comes back once the trash is emptied. Overwritten files are kept as versions.

Can I use it alongside Google Photos?

Absolutely - many users treat FreeUp Photos as their independent second backup. One note: the app backs up files physically present on your phone. Photos that exist only in the Google cloud (after Google's own "free up space") can't be read by any app, so they won't be backed up.

Can I access my files without the app?

Yes, on a paid plan. Your storage is a standard account you can reach over SFTP, WebDAV or Samba - browse, download or upload from any platform, with no app involved. You can also store non-photo files there; they simply count toward your plan. On the free 1 GB plan the app itself browses and restores your files, and you can always ask us for a copy of everything.

What happens if I reach my storage limit?

Nothing is deleted. New uploads pause until you free some space or upgrade to the next plan - which takes two taps in the app.

What if I stop paying?

Your files stay where they are and the account drops to the free 1 GB, so new uploads pause. If you keep more than that with us, we may close the account and delete the files 90 days after the subscription expires - we warn you before, you can download everything in the meantime, and taking up a plan again at any point cancels it.

Can I back up more than one device?

Yes. Sign in with the same Google account on each device - every device gets its own folder on the server, all within one storage plan.

How do I cancel?

Subscriptions are managed entirely through Google Play - cancel anytime with no questions asked. Nothing is deleted: your files stay on the server and the app keeps backing up and restoring within the free 1 GB. Direct SFTP, WebDAV and Samba access ends with the subscription, so if you store more than the free plan holds, download what you need before you cancel.
